The makers had to reassess how a sequel would function without Chadwick Boseman's as T'Challa, after his death from cancer

Disney confirmed in December 2020 that the role of T’Challa will not be filled by a new actor and that the new film would instead focus on other characters of Wakanda.

Additionally, according to Marvel Executive Victoria Alonso, the company has no intentions to digitally duplicate Boseman's appearance for the movie.

After directing and cowriting the first film, Ryan Coogler agreed to write and direct the sequel. Coogler believes that Boseman would want the franchise to continue without him.

The first trailer, which was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, made it obvious that the movie protagonists would be lamenting T'Challa's passing in the sequel.
