Health officials in Massachusetts, United States, on Wednesday confirmed the presence of a rare virus called monkeypox.

Health officials said that 1 case of monkeypox which can affect both animals and humans has been identified.

But now health officials in Europe have confirmed more than a dozen cases of this virus.

Monkeypox, a virus commonly found in animals, was first reported as a disease in 1958.

What is monkeypox ?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the disease was first found among monkeys kept for research.

Just as a liquid-filled rash comes out in smallpox, similarly the rash of monkeypox also comes out.

The disease usually lasts for 2 to 4 weeks and its symptoms begin with swelling of the lymph nodes.

Experts said that this virus is not dangerous like coronavirus, but it is necessary to find out the reason for its spread.

The current smallpox vaccine may prove useful to prevent monkeypox, by vaccination to prevent the spread of the disease.
