Macbook Display Not Turning on, Expected Problems

Need to do urgent work and finding your Mac not turning on is indeed a frustrating situation. Since the Mac screen is not displaying anything, it is often hard to determine why that has happened. Even if Apple devices are of top-notch quality and performance, getting rid of specific common errors and device problems is inevitable.

To deal with most Mac problems, it would help to know the underlying cause for that. So, when you turn on your Mac, but the display is a black screen, it is evident that your device is malfunctioning. It could be either due to software errors or hardware problems.

Seeing a MacBook with a black screen does not necessarily mean that your device is irreparable. Before we get into various possible reasons why your Mac is displaying a black screen, you should check some basic scenarios with it.

When the Mac is not showing anything on the screen, not even the Apple logo lit up after turning the device on, there is a chance that you did not power it on correctly or that the device is not getting sufficient power supply. If that is the scenario, the Mac is not turned on at all at this point.

In another case, when you hear a chime noise when switching on the Mac, it means that the device has been turned on, but the screen went black after booting for seconds. That could likely indicate a software malfunction.

Why is the MacBook displaying a black screen or not turning on?

There is more than one reason why your Mac is facing this. The screen goes black after turning, which could be due to display issues. Or, the device not turning on at all has the possibility of it not receiving enough power supply to stay on. Or, that could also be due to both hardware and software issues.

Since you need to determine the exact cause of the problem to employ the right solution to fix it, here is a list of the possible causes.

Software issues

Software issues on your Mac require experts to fix them. MacBook has quite a complex software system that you should not attempt to repair or handle alone. You might worsen the situation as it is.

Software or firmware issues are highly likely to appear when you have recently updated the macOS to your device. Several underlying bugs or incompatibility issues with the new update can interrupt the functioning of the Mac. Excess disk space consumption often also leads to MacBook not turning on error.

Power supply problems

Power supply issues are not familiar to MacBooks. Instead, Apple devices are known for their long-lasting power and battery life. Either way, it is always possible that specific underlying issues with the device may trigger power problems. Say, if your Mac went black immediately after turning on, it could be the insufficient power supply to operate the system, or the Mac battery has run out of cycle count.

Hardware damages

Normal wear and tear trigger faulty hardware or hardware malfunctions when using your Mac for a long time. Say, if you have somehow dropped your Mac on a not-so-hard surface or extended the screen a little too wide, those can trigger hardware problems in the system. Even if the issues may not be evident immediately, the damages will showcase themselves with time. Hence, one of the most significant changes in your MacBook displaying a black screen is due to hardware damage.

Incompatible or power-consuming third-party applications and programs.

Apple has specific requirements for installing third-party applications or software programs on their devices. And MacBooks are no different. You must use only Apple-compatible apps and software programs to make the most of the Apple functions. But if you need to use third-party apps, they might trigger some unwanted complications to the macOS. One such issue is that they might consume high power, resulting in your Mac not turning on and showing a black screen during startup.

Poor or unstable contact between firmware/software and hardware components on the Mac.

Your Mac will not start up generally if the contact between its hardware and firmware is dusty, faulty, or loosely connected. Frequent errors might destroy the motherboard. Moreover, the underlying causes of motherboard failure are hard to determine by amateurs. To fix such type of errors, you should get help from professionals.

Fixing most Mac screens and not turning on issues depends on the exact cause. Where Mac screen replacement is evident for screen damages, that will cost you around $200 to $1200 at best. These prices also vary based on your Mac model.
